The Greene County Ram girls basketball team was able to beat class 3A eighth ranked Nevada Friday night by a four point margin, but the girls didn’t fare as well against their second ranked opponent in as many days. The Rams fell to the class 4A sixth ranked Perry Jayettes in Perry Saturday afternoon by a 58-35 score.
The Jayettes were paced by seniors Claire Marburger’s 22 points and Maggie Lowe’s 15 points. Both have committed to play basketball at the collegiate level next year. Between them, they scored more points than the Rams’ team score. Perry dominated near the basket and from 3-point range, making eight 3-point baskets. The Rams had none of the long baskets.
Ram senior Kayla Mobley, who averaged 17 points per game going into Saturday’s game, was held to only eight points. She did not score in the first quarter, having few opportunities to shoot. Of her eight points, four came as foul shots. Mobley made four of five at the line. Senior Stacy Mears has also dominated in scoring, but she was scoreless Saturday.
Senior Jolee Wessling scored eight points, Hannah Onken and Marissa Promes both scored six points, Tressa Rasmussen scored four and Kenna Marquardt scored three.
The Jayettes scored first but the Rams were up 6-5 with 4:52 to play in the first quarter. The Rams didn’t score again in the first quarter, and the score at the buzzer was 14-6 for Perry. The halftime score was 28-16 for Perry. The Jayettes stretched the lead to 26 points at the end of the third quarter, 50-24. The Jayettes were up by as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter with a 56-27 score, but the final margin was 23 points, 58-35.
The game was non-conference for the teams. The Rams are now 4-2 overall and 4-1 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.
